I DON'T WANNA BE ALONE (SHUKURU)-AY FEATURING SAUTI SOL

In a move no one anticipated, neo-soul boy band Sauti Sol and Tanzanian Hip-Hop heavyweight AY have teamed for what can only be described as a musical cross breed between the soft sounds of Sauti and the heavy thumping that's AY's signature. "I don't wanna be alone" leaves you feeling mesmerized at the very least, and it's not just the powerful vocals on the track but also the well thought, conscious yet not over-the-top lyrics that'll get you hitting the replay button.

And If the song doesn't do it for you, the video will probably have you sold; five minutes of panoramic scenery, beautiful palettes of bright colors and a story well knitted into it all. The boys have outdone themselves once again.

A$AP Rocky Talks Multi-Million Deal.

In an interview with Pitchfork, A$AP Rocky discussed his multi-million dollar deal with Polo Grounds/RCA.

Pitchfork: A lot of rappers are moving away from big record deals and, as recently as last month, it seemed like you didn’t want to sign with a major, either. What changed your mind?

A$AP Rocky: About three million dollars.(Other rappers who don't sign) are smart, but I feel like Sony/RCA is a family and the people there actually care about me. When I came to meet (Polo Grounds Music founder) Bryan Leach, I got to know him on a personal level– he would set up car service for me to go to other labels. He wanted to see me make it. He’s from Harlem.

I’m going to have creative control; there’s no bullshit. The situation is almost unrealistic. I mean, five months ago I had about $3,000 in my bank account. Now I’m worth $3 million. Nobody’s gotten a deal like that since 50 Cent.

Pitchfork: You represent A$AP as a crew pretty hard, but you’ve become the de facto leader of the group. Why is that?

A$AP: I’m not the leader (laughs). People try and focus on me, but Clams is an impeccable producer, and so is Ty Beats, so is Spaceghost. We all became vegetarians about a month ago– that means these guys are really dedicated. They’re on this dark shit with the all-black (clothes), they want to be rebels. I respect it. It’s a cult– they even have codes. They recruited A$AP people from Vancouver, Arizona, Utah. It’s a secret society.

But don’t get scared– it’s not no Illuminati shit. But it is a brotherhood because the days of racial barriers are over. The days of sexual preference are over– if you’re gay, that’s your business. That doesn’t stop you from being my brother. If you yellow, you’re still my brother. Let’s smoke some weed.

LoLa Monroe Signs With Wiz Khalifa's Taylor Gang Label, Preps Debut Album.

The D.C. rapstress plans to drop the LP's first single in November.
LoLa Monroe has revealed that she signed to Wiz Khalifa’s Taylor Gang imprint, breaking the news in an interview with Atlanta’s V-103 (via Rap-Up). During the chat, she said that the decision to link with the “Black and Yellow” rapper was based on the fact that their visions aligned.

“We got it in with Taylor Gang. Wwe Taylored now,” she said. “Wiz is like a positive free individual that’s about his business and that matches everything I’ve created on my side. When he reached out, he was like, ‘I feel as though our movements represent the same thing, so I want you to rep Taylor Gang.’ And I agreed, so it’s only right. Plus, out of all the situations that came to me, my business instincts and just the comfort level, I felt it was just the right move with him. He’s a stand-up dude and it just felt right.”

The Washington, D.C. rapstress is currently prepping the release of her debut with plans to drop her new single in November.

Unreleased music video from J. Cole for “Lost Ones” off his debut album Cole World: The Sideline Story. The song was produced by J. Cole and video directed by BBGUN & BOHICHIK 3 years ago.

Lets connect the dots: J.Cole “Can’t Get Enough” from his girl, so he wanted to see her “Work Out” and it was worth it. So later that night, he told her “Lights Please”, and fucked her. The following day, he did round 2 with her and hit it raw “In The Morning” . After when he found out his girl was pregnant, he realised that he’s one of the “Lost Ones” and is on the verge to “Breakdown”. However, his girl was “Never Told” that she was used just for the pussy, but hey “Nobody’s Perfect”.

Mogadishu massacre - 70 AU troops killed.

Somalia's Al-Qaeda-linked Shabaab rebels displayed "over 70" dead bodies outside Mogadishu on Thursday, which they claimed were African Union peacekeepers killed in battle.
If verified, it would be the worst massacre and largest single defeat that the AU force in Mogadishu has suffered in some four years of bloody battles defending the weak Western-backed government against the hardline Shabaab.

"We have killed more than 70 of the enemy soldiers today... We have inflicted heavy losses on them and you can see their dead bodies," Shabaab spokesperson Sheikh Ali Mohamud Rage said, displaying the bodies in the dust to reporters.

Angry crowds dragged some of the bodies across the ground, witnesses said.

Photographs show long lines of at least 20 bodies dressed in military uniform laid out in the sand, surrounded by a large crowd with their faces covered.

Witnesses confirmed that the dead bodies were displayed in the extremist Shabaab-controlled Alamada area, some 18km outside the war-torn capital late on Thursday, and that the bodies were not Somalis.

"I have seen the largest number of soldiers killed in a battle, I have counted 63 Burundian soldiers, all of them dead, the Shabaab brought them on trucks to Alamada," Hasan Yunus, a witness said.

"Some of the dead bodies were dragged along by angry residents - I could not count them exactly, but there were more than 60," said Ahmed Jama, another witness.

Burundian

African Union Mission for Somalia (Amisom) troops and government forces have been pushing into remaining rebel areas in Mogadishu, after the bulk of the Shabaab abandoned fixed positions in August.

Burundian troops with the 9 000 strong Amisom force control the sector closest to the fighting and are believed to have led the assault.

Ugandan soldiers make up the bulk of the AU force and control other sections of the anarchic capital.

Despite their pullout from much from the capital, the Shabaab have not wavered from their aim to topple the AU-protected government. They still control large swathes of southern and central Somalia, and remain a serious security threat.

Shabaab fighters in southern Somalia are also facing assaults from Kenyan troops and tanks backed by air strikes since Nairobi declared war on the insurgents and confirmed it had moved its forces into Somalia on Sunday.

Kenya's military said on Thursday it had seized the coastal area of Ras Kamboni without a fight, a former Shabaab stronghold just across the Somali border, said military spokesperson Major Emmanuel Chirchir.

Inland, Chirchir said Kenyan troops were bogged down by "heavy rains" some 100km inside Somalia, as they prepared to push forward to seize the town of Afmadow, where Somali government forces were fighting.

Nairobi's unprecedented military incursion into Somalia, which it said had already killed dozens of Shabaab fighters, has triggered warnings of bloody retaliation by the Shabaab.

The Shabaab deny involvement in a spate of attacks and abductions from Kenya - including that of a disabled French woman who died in captivity - that Nairobi says prompted its offensive.

Guerrilla tactics

In Somalia, there has been a series of suicide bombings in the capital since the Shabaab rebels said they were abandoning face-to-face battles and switching to guerrilla tactics in the city instead.

Earlier this month, a suicide bomber exploded a truck laden with explosives, killing at least 82 people and wounding many more.

But the deaths in Mogadishu Thursday provide a grim warning suggesting that the Shabaab remain a powerful military threat.

Shamso Abdulkadir was amongst the giant crowd who came to see the dead bodies, and said that some wore body armour and helmets.

"I have counted 70, most of them were shot in the head and shoulders," Abdulakdir told AFP.

"Residents gathered to watch the dead bodies after they were publicly displayed, and then afterwards, they were dragged about by people," she said.

Somali government and Amisom officials could not be immediately reached for comment.

Heavy fighting was reported in the northwest Deynile district throughout Thursday, but Somali government officials had earlier said they were moving alongside AU troops "towards the final strongholds of the terrorist militants".

Battles began before dawn in Mogadishu as AU-backed Somali forces advanced on holdout Islamist Shabaab positions, officials and witnesses said.

The fighting was cantered in Deynile suburb, a remaining pocket still held by the al-Qaeda linked militants, which borders the rebel-held Afgoye, the world's largest camp for displaced people.

Trial Success May Mean 2015 Release for Malaria Vaccine.

The first malaria vaccine could be ready for use by 2015, according to experts reporting encouraging results from a phase III trial, although further data are needed before rollout.

The vaccine could help avoid many of the nearly 800,000 malaria-related deaths a year, most of which occur in Sub-Saharan Africa. It may also free up some of the 40 per cent of health spending in Africa that goes towards fighting the disease, according to Andrew Witty, chief executive officer of GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), which developed the vaccine collaboration with the PATH Malaria Vaccine Initiative (MVI).

RTS,S/AS01 cuts the risk of developing clinical malaria - typified by chills and high fevers that require medical attention - for children aged 5-17 months over a period of one year by 56 per cent and of developing severe malaria - which affects key organs and can be fatal - by 47 per cent, according to data published online in the New England Journal of Medicine this week (18 October).

The data come from around 6,000 of the more than 15,000 children enrolled in a phase III trial at 11 sites in seven countries in Sub-Saharan Africa. Each child received three doses of vaccine, given at one-month intervals. The one-year efficacy results in infants aged 6-12 weeks are expected to be available in late 2012; and the longer-term efficacy data for all ages by the end of 2014.

The vaccine works in an unusual way, defending the immune system against the parasite Plasmodium falciparum when it first enters a human host's bloodstream. If approved, it will be the first vaccine against a parasite rather than a virus or a bacterium.

Tsiri Agbenyega, head of the malaria research unit at Komfo-Anokye Hospital in Ghana and a lead researcher at one of the trial sites, said that it is remarkable that the vaccine works and is safe, considering there has never been a successful vaccine against human parasites.

Witty said that the research journey to this point had lasted 25 years. He added that GSK is dedicated to providing the vaccine, once it is approved, at the lowest possible cost.

Any profits from the vaccine will be re-channelled towards the research and development of neglected tropical diseases, according to Witty.
But rollout may be slowed by challenges including funding and capacity to administer the new vaccine and whether donors will fund a vaccine that is only 50 per cent effective when the usual threshold is 90 per cent.

Sally Ethelston, director of the PATH MVI said: "We have a history of countries not being ready to roll out vaccines [once they are available]".

Ethelston said that "a lot of people will be waiting for the next set of data" before committing money.

But she added that PATH MVI is working with governments and organisations "so they are able to make informed decisions" about whether to commit to purchasing and administering the vaccine once it is available.

Move to Strengthen Shilling Most Welcome.

The Bank of Tanzania has started to take a decisive action to strengthen the local currency and reduce skyrocketing commodity prices. On Tuesday the Bank of Tanzania governor, Prof Benno Ndulu, met chief executive officers of commercial banks to outline new measures that would be instituted to salvage the economy.

Most of the key measures are within the capacity of the central bank to implement and aim at reducing the amount of local currency in the economy. At the same time, they should be able to increase the supply of foreign currency in the economy.

The measures should result, not only into a stronger shilling, but would also reduce the rate of price increase.

The shilling has been continually falling since the beginning of the year and traded at Sh1,765 to the dollar last week and gained slightly to trade at Sh1,688 early this week. Experts say it is likely that the Tanzanian shilling could trade at Sh2,000 to the dollar by end of the year!

The annual headline inflation in the year ending September stood at 16.8 per cent, rising from 6.4 per cent in January. The situation has made life more expensive to Tanzanians.
It costs more than ever before to put food on the table, for example, and pay school fees, more so if one is sending one's children abroad or the local "international" schools that charge in dollars.

Causes of a weaker shilling and high inflation are many, but the most obvious are the power crisis which went wild for most of this year, drought and the failure to bridge the gap between imports and exports.

These factors demand more action and coordinated efforts from both the private and public sectors. The measures being taken by BoT are temporary and might not yield the desired results. Efforts must be made to increase food supply as well as exports for a sustainable strengthening of the Tanzanian shilling.

Mining Transparency Test Eludes Dar es Salaam.

THE Ministry of Energy and Minerals is still struggling to join the global mining transparency group after failing to qualify earlier this year.

The country failed to fulfil all seven requirements under Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI), including accounting for the whereabouts of 24bn/- in mineral royalties.

The Energy and Mineral Minister, Mr William Ngeleja, however, said the process was going on well and he was optimistic the country would meet the seven requirements before next March.

"We have made a good progress in those seven areas, in which we failed to comply," Mr Ngeleja told journalists at a news conference on Thursday adding, "the discrepancies was mainly in posting data in accounts," he said.

The minister said the problems was on the way portfolios of different revenue accounts were being posted and reconciliation by the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA), the Treasury and mining firms.

For a country to qualify for EITI compliant membership, it must exercise transparency and accountability in revenues that accrue from its resources such as oil, gas and minerals.

Other conditions require that the country passes through what is referred to as the sign up, preparation, disclosure and dissemination stages.

After failing to comply in March, the compliance period was extended and determined in June before it was pushed to March next year during the EITI meeting.

According to Policy Forum, the government could not explain the whereabouts of the missing 24bn/- in minerals revenues. This is excluding the discrepancy in pay as you earn (PAYE) and NSSF.

The Controller and Auditor General (CAG) has also been engaged to audit the report and suggest how to avoid the discrepancies.
The Interfaith Standing Committee member, Archbishop Paul Ruzoka, urged the government to undertake necessary reforms, such as EITI and other mechanisms to enhance accountable governance in the extractive industries.

"These processes (however) must fully include civil society organisations by giving them due notice and providing adequate documentation for effective participation," Archbishop Ruzoka said.

As Tanzania failed to comply in June, six other countries were declared compliant by EITI Board during the meeting held in Paris in March. The countries are the Central African Republic, Kyrgyz, Niger, Nigeria, Norway and Yemen.

The older compliant members include Ghana, Azerbbaijan, Liberia, Mongolia and Timor-Leste.

Chavez declares himself free of cancer.

Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez declared himself cancer-free on Thursday, four months after surgery to remove a cancerous tumor that shook the South American nation ahead of a 2012 presidential vote.
"I am free of illness," Chavez, 57, said in an address to Venezuelans after touching down from Cuba in a western state where he was making a pilgrimage to a Catholic shrine.
Despite the ebullient socialist's declarations, most experts say it is impossible for a cancer patient to be considered out of danger until at least two years after treatment has finished.
Dressed in a green military uniform and speaking confidently, Chavez said the tests he underwent in Cuba this week had shown there were no malignant cells in his body following four cycles of chemotherapy after the June 20 operation in Havana.

"A vital stage has concluded. Everything went perfectly. I got top marks, 20 out of 20," he said. "The new Chavez is back... We will live and we will continue living."

Since coming to power in 1999, Chavez has transformed Venezuela with sweeping nationalisations, huge injections of cash into social projects in the slums, an authoritarian and one-man style of leadership, and constant jibes at Washington.

Adored by supporters, he is viewed as a clownish but dangerous dictator by foes who say Chavez wants to install an unwanted Cuban-style communism in Venezuela.

Chavez has not given precise details of his cancer, but the surgery was in his abdomen region. There has been intense speculation his condition is worse than he has let on.

Socialism is the way of Christ

Touching down at La Fria airport, Chavez hugged a group of smiling ministers and warmly greeted supporters, singing with some and slapping the backs of others.

After a speech carried on all Venezuelan TV and radio stations, he set off driving through the hills to the Christ of La Grita shrine where Chavez said he had to fulfill a vow.

"I am more and more Christian. Socialism is the way of Christ. Love, social justice, that is Christ," said Chavez, who has mixed communism, Catholicism and veneration of Venezuela's independence hero Simon Bolivar during a remarkable rule.

Exuding confidence, Chavez pledged to win next year's election when he will face an opposition coalition candidate to be chosen at a February primary.
Chavez has benefited from a sympathy bounce in polls, taking him to an approval rating near 60%. But analysts say that may fall if his health deteriorates again and he is seen as unfit to run a re-election campaign or rule for another six years.

"It will be easier for a donkey to pass through the eye of a needle than for the opposition to win the elections," Chavez said in an idiosyncratic use of a saying in the Bible.

Famous for swilling coffee, sleeping just a few hours and exhausting aides with his round-the-clock, high-energy style, Chavez said it was time to tone down his lifestyle.

"I have decided, and it is necessary, to change radically my habits to preserve my health and accompany you in the new fatherland."

Malaria Vaccine Coming Soon.

Tanzanian children will be among the first in Africa to benefit from a malaria vaccine developed following a successful medical research. The vaccine has been proved to give significant protection against clinical and severe malaria while showing an acceptable safety profile.Researchers say the efficacy and safety results in six to 12-week-old infants would come out by the end of 2012 and added that the findings on the longer-term protective effects of the vaccine, 30 months after the third dose should be available by the end of 2014.
The report showing first results from a large-scale phase three trial of RTS,S vaccine were unveiled yesterday by the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) in Dar es Salaam. They indicated that three doses of the vaccine reduced the risk of children experiencing clinical malaria and severe malaria by 56 per cent and 47 per cent, respectively.

The trial of the vaccine was conducted in 11 sites in seven countries across sub-Sahara Africa, including Tanzania where the study took place at Korogwe and Bagamoyo. Other countries were Burkina Faso, Ghana, Gabon, Kenya, Malawi and Mozambique. According to the report, the analysis was performed on data from the first 6,000 children aged five to 17 months, over a 12-month period following vaccination, out of the total of 15,460 infants and children enrolled in the pilot study.

Regarding safety, the presentations made by Dr Salim Abdulla, the principal investigator of the trial for Bagamoyo site and Dr Samwel Gesase of Korogwe pointed out that the overall incidence of Serious Adverse Events (SAEs) comparable between the RTS,S/AS01 vaccine which was 18 per cent and those receiving a control vaccine was 20 per cent.

An analysis of severe malaria episodes so far reported in all the children enrolled in the study showed 35 per cent efficacy over a follow-up period ranging between 0 and 22 months (average 11.5 months).

The Director of Preventive services in the ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Dr Donan Mmbando, said the results were a milestone in the fight against malaria in the country as it celebrates 50th anniversay of independence.

He said malaria, which is preventable, was claiming more than 20,000 lives in the country annually, most of whom being expectant mothers and children under the age of five. He said 60 to 80 per cent of deaths occurred at home before patients reached a health facility. He, however, expressed optimism that the vaccine, coupled with other malaria control interventions such as treated mosquito nets would reduce the number of deaths in the country significantly.

"My ministry will include the vaccine in the national health system if all safety and efficacy indications prove positive as demonstrated in this first result of phase three" he said. According to NIMR, malaria incidents occur in approximately 225 million people worldwide each year killing about 781,000 of them, mostly those in Africa. Malaria remains the major health threat in Africa.

The results show that the RTS,S vaccine has consistently shown protection against Plasmodium falciparum malaria in children and infants since phase two trials.

The bigger advantage of the vaccine according to the report is that it can be administered safely with other childhood vaccines without restrictions or complications.
From March 2009 through January 2011, the researchers randomly assigned 15,460 children to one of the three original groups in a one-one-one ratio and comparator vaccines; rabies vaccine for children of 5 to 17 months of age was administered at enrollment and minningococcal serogroup for children of six to 12 months. Passive surveillance for malaria was thereafter undertaken from the time of administration of the first dose of vaccine until the end of the study whereas the participants were encouraged to seek care at health facilities within the study area for any illness.

Kibaki Vows to Defend Kenya's Territory.

President Kibaki has vowed to defend Kenya's territorial integrity as Kenyan security forces take over Ras Kamboni in Somalia from al Shabaab militia.

Prime Minister Raila Odinga announced Kenya's success in taking over Ras Kamboni during Mashujaa Day celebrations at the Nyayo National Stadium Thursday.

"We are fighting the criminal group. Today we have taken over Ras Kamboni. We will fight them until we are secure," Mr Odinga said during the second Mashujaa Day which was formerly marked as Kenyatta Day.

Speaking for the first time since Kenya launched war on al Shabaab on Sunday, President Kibaki noted that the security of the country is paramount and that the government will provide adequate security in all parts.

"We will defend our territorial integrity through all measures necessary to ensure peace and stability," the President said.

Destabilise nation

The Head of State, who is also the Commander in Chief of the Defence Forces, said Kenya's security forces have began operations within and outside the country's borders against militants who have sought to destabilise the nation.

"In this regard, we are working closely with the Transitional Federal Government of Somalia, IGAD and the African Union," the President said.

The President hailed soldiers who are engaged in the operation dubbed "Operation Linda Nchi."

"We pray for their safety and security as they embark on defending our country, as we decisively deal with this threat to our national security. These men and women are protecting our sovereignty. As a country we should support these brave modern day heroes," the President said.

The President, however, said each Kenyan has a role to play to ensure "no one among us, is used to disrupt peace and stability."

"We should all be vigilant and as true patriots, ensure that we identify the bad elements among us. The hospitality of the Kenyan people must never be abused by some bad elements."

Vice-President Kalonzo Musyoka also commended the military led by Chief of Defence Forces Gen Julius Karangi for defending Kenya's soil.

"Even our founding father Mzee Jomo Kenyatta said not even an inch of our country will be taken by anyone," Mr Musyoka said.
He said Kenyans should be united as the country battles Al shabab adding that even Parliament was together with the President as the Commander in Chief.

He described Kenya's military as courageous and prepared to ensure the country is protected.

Mr Odinga said al Shabab had brought myriad of problems to the country.

"We are fighting the militia responsible for kidnap and killing of our people. We want to secure our country," Mr Odinga said.

On Wednesday, Kenya troops were pushing forward towards an al Shabaab stronghold of Afmadow in southern Somalia. However, the military thrust has been hampered by heavy rain.

The army has already captured Dhobley and Tabda, key al Shabaab towns. It ultimate target is Kismayu.
Kenya's operation in Somalia started on Sunday.

Bombing the Homeless

Hawa Jundi sat on the ground outside a makeshift shelter where she and her family now live. A violent storm was moving in and lightning streaked toward the earth as the wind began blowing hard against the tarpaulin tied to a frame of sticks.

Jundi is one of tens of thousands - perhaps hundreds of thousands of people - who are scattered throughout Blue Nile state in Sudan after fleeing their villages to avoid aerial bombardment. Blue Nile state lies south east of Khartoum and borders Ethiopia.

Already a humanitarian crisis, the situation is likely to worsen as food supplies dwindle. Jundi said her family eats one meal a day by foraging for wild plants and scavenging sorghum from abandoned farms.

She and her family left their village of Sally, in Blue Nile state, after it was attacked by an Antonov bomber, sent by the government of Sudan. But even here, she has not found safety.

Earlier that day, she said, she was almost hit by a piece of shrapnel from a bomb dropped in a riverbed nearby, where she and other villagers were searching for granules of gold to sell and buy food.

"I don't know why the Antonov came and bombed us, but we left our village and came here," she said. "And after we came here, we found that the Antonov is coming also to this place."

The rebel Sudan Peoples' Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) says Sudan is waging a war of terror from above against civilians.

"The main strategy of Khartoum to bomb the civil population is to break the will of the combatants," Malik Agar, leader of the SPLM-N, told IPS. "These are the relatives of the combatants - fathers, mothers, wives, children - so they think this will break the will of the fighters."

In an interview in his bush camp near the rebel stronghold of Kurmuk, Agar told IPS as many as 600,000 people may have fled their homes.

The number of displaced people is impossible to verify. Aid agencies have pulled out since the conflict began in early September, and human rights groups have been unable to access the area.

On Sept. 13, the United Nations News Service said about 100,000 people had already fled their villages, but U.N. officials in Khartoum declined to give current estimates.

The Sudanese government denies it is attacking civilians deliberately. Officials have said the raids are aimed at military targets only.

Rights groups have accused Khartoum of bombing civilians in Darfur states as well as South Kordofan, which borders Blue Nile and where the SPLM-N is also battling government forces.

In Blue Nile, Sudan's air force is using Antonov bombers, which were built by the Soviets in 1968 and are notoriously inaccurate. Whether Khartoum intended or not or not, it is clear that civilians have become victims.

In the village of Maiyes, about 20 kilometres from the front line, villagers said an entire family of six was killed when a bomb fell on their hut a week before. Churned up earth around a waste-deep crater was all that remained of the family home. Scattered around the site where pieces of twisted shrapnel and household items, including a single small child's shoe.

"One of (the victims) was pregnant and it cut her stomach," said Heder Abusita, the village chief. "Rueana Murdis also was killed here with her small kid. And also there is Bushara. He died here in this house. His feet were cut, and his stomach also was cut."

Villagers are unlikely to receive medical attention if they are injured. Maiyes is about three hours away, down punishing dirt roads, from the only hospital in rebel-held territory.

Evan Atar is the only doctor in the rebel stronghold of Kurmuk town, and he said the hospital here is quickly running out of supplies. He added that the hospital has a policy of treating anyone - government soldiers, rebels, or civilians.

In one room in the Kurmuk hospital, nurses dressed the wound of an SPLM-N fighter. As he lay writhing on a gurney, he emitted an eerie howl.

Atar said the soldier had just arrived from the front after being shot through the leg, and he had been dosed with Ketamine, a drug that causes hallucinations.

"At the beginning, we give full anesthesia where he sleeps completely," said Atar. "But now when it comes to dressing we can't continue giving the full anesthesia all the time, so we give something that makes him feel there is no pain."

In another ward, an elderly man, Alton Osman, lay on a bed with bandages on his thigh and arm. He had narrowly avoided having the arm amputated, Atar said. Osman had been hit by shrapnel from a bomb, but luckily he had been found by SPLM-N soldiers who drove him to the hospital.

Agar has called on the international community to pressure Khartoum to stop bombing civilians and to create a "humanitarian corridor" that will allow non-governmental organisations to bring food and medicine to displaced people.

The bombing raids have driven humanitarian groups out of the area. On the first trip by journalists into rebel-controlled territory on Oct. 6 to 8, reporters saw abandoned compounds formerly occupied by NGOs and U.N. agencies, including the World Food Programme.
With food supplies dwindling, more and more refugees are expected to flee Blue Nile into neighbouring countries. Already, the U.N. says, 30,000 people are in camps across the border in Ethiopia.

The humanitarian crisis in Blue Nile could be the first sign of a nationwide catastrophe.

International Crisis Group (ICG), a Brussels-based think tank, on Sep. 26 warned that the conflict between the SPLM- N and the government threatens to plunge the entire country into civil war. In a statement ICG said hardliners within Sudan's President Omar al-Bashir's ruling National Congress Party advocate a military response to rebel groups, rather than negotiation.

"This, however, is pushing Sudan's disparate rebel movements and opposition forces together and could trigger a civil war for control of the country," the group said.

President Zuma Under Fire Over Spending.

South Africa's President Jacob Zuma was at the centre of a row Thursday over the millions spent on the renovation of South Africa's government and presidential buildings.

An opposition deputy said nearly 400 million rand (36 million euros, 50 million dollars) had been spent on presidential offices and residences at Cape Town and Pretoria, as well as the cabinet's Pretoria estate.

"Such exorbitant expenditure represents just how disconnected the president is from the needs of the South African people," said Athol Trollip, leader of the main opposition Democratic Alliance in parliament.

"At a time when millions of South Africans face rising unemployment, a lack of basic services and poor quality housing, the president has seen fit to reward himself with a series of renovations to his lavish residences."

The money would have been better spent on housing for ordinary South Africans, he added. Trollip issued his statement after receiving a series of parliamentary replies from the public works ministry Wednesday.

"This is a leader who shows little regard for the plight of South Africans, and little respect for the prudent way in which state funds should be managed," he said.

Zanele Mngadi, a spokesman for Zuma, said the work had been done at the initiative of the public works ministry.

"The president is not implicated in these renovations," she told The Star.

But Trollip said the president must be accountable for the spending.
"These are homes that are intended for the president's use, and the president must account for their significant price tags. He owes the South African people a full explanation," he said

The work included overhauling the interior of the presidential residence in Pretoria including its swimming pool, sauna and security system at a cost of 168 million rand.

According to the latest government figures, published in August 2010, 21.5 percent of the population live in shanty towns in the Gauteng region around Pretoria.

Eighteen percent of South Africans live without electricity and 10 percent without running water.

Overcrowding and poor housing has also been blamed as contributory factors for the country's high crime rate.

Muammar Gaddafi Killed As Sirte Falls.

Muammar Gaddafi has been killed after National Transitional Council fighters overran loyalist defences in Sirte, the toppled Libyan leader's hometown and final stronghold.
"We have been waiting for this moment for a long time. Muammar Gaddafi has been killed," Mahmoud Jibril, the de facto Libyan prime minister, told reporters on Thursday in Tripoli, the capital.

Crowds took to the streets of Tripoli and Benghazi, the eastern city that spearheaded the uprising against Gaddafi's 42-year rule in February, to celebrate the news, with some firing guns and waving Libya's new flag.

Abdul Hakim Belhaj, an NTC military chief, said Gaddafi had died of his wounds after being captured on Thursday.

The body of the former Libyan leader was taken to a location which is being kept secret for security reasons, Mohamed Abdel Kafi, an NTC official in the city of Misrata, told the Reuters news agency.

Earlier, Abdel Majid, another NTC official, said the toppled leader had been wounded in both legs.

The news came shortly after the NTC captured Sirte after weeks of fierce fighting.

"Thank God they have caught this person. In one hour, Sirte was liberated," a fighter in the town said.

Al Jazeera's Tony Birtley, reporting from Sirte, said Libyans there celebrating the beginning of a "new Libya".

"This is bringing a form of closure," he said. "Gaddafi stayed true to his words, that he would stay in Libya till the end.

"It was surprising to many that he did actually stay here in Sirte - it's taken such a bombardment in the last 13 days. Nothing could survive in here for very long. I think they were starved of food, starved of ammunition, and finally there was nothing to do but to run".

Conflicting reports

In Tripoli, Jibril said he had received unconfirmed reports that Gaddafi's most prominent son, Saif al-Islam, was in a convoy fleeing Sirte.

Meanwhile, there were conflicting reports about the fate of one of his sons, Mutassim Gaddafi.

Reuters reported that one of the news agency's sources had seen video of Mutassim lying on a bed and covered in blood, but alive.
Mahmoud Shammam, the NTC's information minister, said he had received reports that Mutassim had been captured alive in Sirte, but could not confirm the news.

However, Mohamed Leith, an NTC commander, told the AFP news agency that Mutassim had been killed.

"We found him dead. We put his body and that of (former defence minister) Abu Bakr Younus in an ambulance to take them to Misrata".

Footage had emerged earlier in the day of the body of Younus.

Abdul Hakim Al Jalil, commander of the NTC's 11th brigade, said that Moussa Ibrahim, the former spokesman for Gaddafi's fallen government, had been captured near Sirte.

I’ve got a message for Lil Wayne, his Cash Money Brothers, DJ Khaled, Puff Daddy and all the rappers from other parts of the country who now live in Miami. I’m tired of seeing these cats using up our beaches, soaking up our sunshine, taking over the nightclubs, and sleeping with our women without investing anything into the community. I want to know when Lil Wayne is going to do more than show up courtside at the American Airlines Arena. Hell, it’s not like he paid for them anyway. You know he got comped.
